Biography
His research on the INFORM programme advanced the qualitative understanding of patient and clinician experiences of prosthetic infection, and as Chief Investigator of the INFORM: EP study he led the development and implementation of the evidence-based INFORM guidelines on the management of prosthetic infection. More recently he led the development of an NHSe Training Module on the Management of Prosthetic Infection aimed at allied health professionals.
He recently led on the adoption and implementation of a shared-decision making tool for osteoarthritis; the qualitative evaluation of the NIHR-funded STAR clinic for chronic pain after knee replacement and he is currently leading work packages on the largest ever orthopaedic trial NIHR PGfAR (NIHR203671) Hip Implant Prosthesis Programme for the Younger total hip replacement patient (HiPPY). He is also Co-Chief Investigator of the SOS Project, a study to improve support for orthopaedic surgeons in managing outlier performance.
Andrew is Director of the Bristol Medical School’s Short Courses Programme; Co-director of the Bristol Bone and Joints Health Integration Team; a Member of Versus Arthritis' Research Expert Committee; and Chair of the Bone and Joint Infection Society's Research Committee.
Research interests
My research focuses on health services research, and the development, evaluation and implementation of health interventions. I'm located within the Musculoskeletal Research Unit in the Bristol Medical School, Translational Health Sciences, University of Bristol. I lead the unit's Qualitative Musculoskeletal Research Group, which conducts qualitative research in orthopaedic surgery and rheumatology.

I am Director of the Bristol Medical school Short Courses Programme, leading on the delivery and management of a comprehensive programme of over 45 intensive online courses aimed postgraduate researchers, academic staff and healthcare professionals.
I am also a Case Based Learning facilitator, helping medical students to develop their knowledge and learning abilities. I am Research Methods Unit Director, leading sessions on the MSc Orthopaedic Research Methods and Evidence-Based Medicine course. I also lead teaching on the iBSc in Health Sciences course for intercalating medical students. I supervise PhD and MD candidates, and I am always open to taking on more doctoral students.
I have developed and led training in research methods on the University of Bristol 5-day Qualitative Research Methods Short Course, and have designed and delivered training for North Bristol NHS Trust, the HRA Frenchay Research Ethics Committee, and The Institute of Cancer Research, London.
